Imago by Cosmic-Cuttlefish Imago by Cosmic-Cuttlefish
This fractal is inspired by The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, in which the 'imago' is a recurring theme. The book draws attention to the dual meaning of the word: it refers to the adult stage of a winged insect, such as a moth, but also to a Jungian psychological concept of the same name. My idea for this fractal was to try and convey the dual meaning by having an overall shape that looks like a moth, but also like one of those old-fashioned inkblots used in the Rorschach test.

Thanks for looking!

Made with Apophysis 7X (vignette effect made with Photoshop).

Well, reading your subtext to this image, I think you did great.

I can see the insect, the blobs and some "silence of the lambs" like feeling.

Thank you very much - I'm glad it comes across. :) I normally try to avoid long descriptions, but figured this one might work better with some explanation.

Thanks! It's a bit strange/different to my usual sort of thing, but I'm glad you like it. :)

You've made a very captivating fractal once again. :) I was instantly reminded of the Rorschach test, too, and I like how you chose to use blueish(?) black and off-white: they look less harsh than pure black and white would have done yet make the picture somehow look slightly intimidating. On a closer inspection, some of the outer edges and the tips of the feelers look like they were disintegrating, which is also an interesting feature and might go well with the theme/inspiration of the fractal (I have to admit that I haven't read the book).

All in all, very nice work! Your creativity with Apophysis is very inspiring, and it's interesting to see how many kinds of pictures you can create with fractals.

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback/interpretation! It's always a nice surprise to get comments like these. :) I did some research into the inkblots used in the Rorschach test whilst making this, and people supposedly often found the black-and-white ones intimidating or unsettling, so I suppose that's a good thing in this case.

I think you'd enjoy the book. It's very well written, and avoids some of the stereotypes of the thriller genre - though it's been a while now since I read it myself.
